The Jewish Studies and Music Study Group (JSMSG) is pleased to launch our first Emerging Scholar Workshop as part of the 2026 Annual Meeting of the American Musicological Society. This workshop promotes new research at the intersection of Jewish Studies and Music and fosters scholarly exchange through structured mentorship and collective discussion.
We invite applications from ABD doctoral candidates and early-career scholars whose PhDs were awarded no earlier than May 2021. Eligible projects should engage Jewish musical cultures in any geographical, cultural, or historical context. Submissions should be well-developed work-in-progress (e.g., a dissertation chapter, article draft, or component of a book project) that would benefit from focused critical feedback and collaborative engagement.
Selected participants will offer a brief five-minute introduction, followed by approximately fifteen minutes of discussion and feedback. Each participant will be paired by the JSMSG organizers with an experienced scholar, who will provide individualized comments and help guide the discussion. The workshop will be open to AMS attendees. Pre-circulated materials will be shared with the paired respondent and registered workshop participants, according to the presenter’s preferences.

• Project abstract (up to 350 words) outlining research questions, primary sources/materials, and methodological approach; plus 1–2 sentences on stage of development; two questions for workshop feedback; and 2–3 keywords.
• Short CV (max. 2 pages) with affiliation (if applicable) and contact information.
