University of California Press (UC Press) is seeking individual and co-editor applications for the editorship of The Journal of Musicology. Applicant(s) appointed to this position will succeed current Co-Editors Francesca Brittan and Sam Barrett when their editorial term ends in December 2026.
Journal of Musicology (JM) is a refereed, international quarterly journal devoted to exemplary scholarship across the spectrum of music studies. As a leading disciplinary forum founded in 1981 by Marian Green, JM reflects the breadth of musicology today and helps to shape the future trajectory of cross-disciplinary humanistic inquiry. Through its long-standing tradition of publishing the most exciting work by younger scholars alongside the contributions of senior scholars, JM continues to expand the perimeters of musicology in a spirit of openness, diversity, and academic excellence. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in musicology, or a related field, and a distinguished scholarly record. Previous journal editorial experience is preferred, but not required. Applicants should possess strong organizational and management skills, the ability to work with others, and a commitment to publishing high quality, relevant, and engaging scholarship.
Primary responsibilities of the Editor/Co-Editor include:
● Solicitation of quality research and other scholarly work for the journal
● Overseeing the peer review and review of proofs
● Making final decisions on manuscripts
● Appointing and collaborating with Editorial Board members
● Meeting with UC Press staff regularly to discuss various aspects of journal publishing, journal promotion, and other journal projects
UC Press offers a modest stipend for editorial support for this position.
