The Department of Musicology takes a broad view of music-centered research and aims to equip students to become leading researchers and teachers in a variety of academic and/or public sector settings. Reflecting Miami’s geographical location and cultural identities, the Department’s strengths include musics of the Americas (including the Caribbean) and Europe, the interplay of local and global musical sounds and repertories, and interdisciplinary approaches to musicological research. Our research and teaching explore how making, distributing, and experiencing music reflect and shape individual and group identities and values.
Students seeking the degree of Master of Music in Musicology enjoy a balanced curriculum of study in music literature and analysis, ethnomusicology, critical theory, and research methods, along with opportunities to develop skills in music performance, composition, and pedagogy. Coursework in the program is designed to enable students to acquire in-depth knowledge of music history and culture and to develop students’ abilities to write and talk effectively about relevant issues within musicology and related disciplines.
