The University of Notre Dame’s Program of Liberal Studies (PLS) invites applications for a Director of Undergraduate Studies. This is a non-tenure track teaching position with administrative and advising responsibilities. The successful candidate will serve as the public face of the department’s undergraduate experience, providing academic guidance to approximately 115 majors, overseeing undergraduate programming, and teaching courses within our unique integrated curriculum. We have a strong preference for candidates with teaching experience in Great Books programs or core-text curricula, and the ability to contribute to one or more of our disciplinary tutorials. Please see the website for more information about our curriculum, which encompasses both Great Books seminars and subject-specific courses in literature, philosophy, theology, music, history, political theory, and the natural and social sciences. Qualifications
A candidate must hold the PhD. The appointment can be at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor, or Associate Teaching Professor for candidates with appropriate administrative and teaching experience, with opportunities for reappointment and promotion to Associate Teaching Professor and Full Teaching Professor.
Application Instructions
Before applying, candidates are strongly encouraged to consult the department website (https:/www.pls.nd.edu) and the university mission statement (https://www.nd.edu/about/mission/).
All applications should include a letter of interest, a CV, teaching statement, teaching evaluations, a one-page course plan for one of our subject-specific “tutorials” (see https://pls.nd.edu/the-major/courses/tutorials/), and three letters of recommendation. Questions about the position may be addressed to Prof. Christopher Chowrimootoo, Chairperson, Program of Liberal Studies, prlibst@nd.edu.
Applications are due by March 27, 2026, with interviews of candidates scheduled to take place in late April. The successful candidate is expected to assume the position in the Fall 2026 semester.
