We are pleased to announce the formation of the Persian Music Theory and Analysis Research Unit (PMTARU), a new scholarly initiative within the International Foundation for the Theory and Analysis of World Musics (IFTAWM).
The Research Unit aims to advance the theoretical and analytical study of Persian music and foster international collaboration among scholars, composers, performers, and researchers. Its areas of interest include musical structures, theoretical foundations, compositional and improvisational practices, and the historical development of Persian/Iranian musical traditions. Historical, comparative, and interdisciplinary approaches are also welcome.
Inaugural International Symposium – Tentatively Summer 2027
As its first major initiative, PMTARU is planning an international online symposium, tentatively scheduled for Summer 2027. Selected contributions may be developed into a special issue of Analytical Approaches to World Music (AAWM), subject to editorial approval and peer review. Further details will be announced in due course.
Invitation to Join
Scholars, researchers, composers, performers, and graduate students interested in Persian music theory and analysis are warmly invited to join the Research Unit and participate in its future activities. Membership is free and open to all interested participants.
