Dear colleagues,
Deadlines for graduate-school applications are approaching, and I want to encourage you to inform promising students about our program at Washington University in St. Louis.
Our department grants MA and PhD degrees in musicology (including ethnomusicology) and music theory. This year we are not accepting applications for the PhD program as the university absorbs the cost of funding our many current students.
We are, however, accepting applicants to our MA program, graduates of which have pursued a variety of exciting career and educational trajectories, including doctoral studies at Wash U and other prestigious universities.
We offer MA students:
· Generous financial support, including full tuition waivers and a stipend that allows full-time focus on graduate study.
· Faculty representing a wide range of research interests and methodologies, including Afrodiasporic music, American music (North America, South America, and the Caribbean), art economies, classical music, colonialism, computational modeling, digital humanities, electronic music, ethnography, experimental music, film music, jazz, improvisation, music theater, pedagogy, piano culture, popular music, and race and ethnicity.
· Opportunities to pursue interdisciplinary studies across our campus.
· Substantial funding for conference travel and research.
For more information or to begin an application, visit our website: https://music.wustl.edu/graduate.
Please contact the Director of Graduate Studies (Paul Steinbeck, paul.steinbeck@wustl.edu) if you have questions about the Department of Music or the application process.
This year’s application deadline is December 1, 2025.
Sincerely,
Alexander Stefaniak
