The Department of Music at Case Western Reserve University invites applications for a full-time appointment at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor for the 2026-27 academic year, with the possibility of renewal for up to two additional years. The Department seeks a musicologist or ethnomusicologist specializing in global and/or popular music with a strong teaching record. Duties will include teaching three courses per semester in addition to a share of departmental advising and adjudication, and may also include directing the Department’s Popular Music Ensemble, which would count as part of the teaching load.
The successful candidate for this position will join a vibrant team of music scholars, artists, and educators. CWRU and the Cleveland Institute of Music cooperate in a Joint Music Program, providing students with the advantages of both a conservatory and a major research university. The annual starting base salary range for this position is $60,000 – $65,000. CWRU considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. Minimum qualifications include a completed PhD in musicology or ethnomusicology by August 1, 2026, a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, and a program of research and/or publication in musicology and/or ethnomusicology. Desirable additional qualifications include experience in directing college-level popular music ensembles and performing professionally in popular music, jazz, and/or related idioms.
