University Professor and Chair of Musicology (Music of the European Modern Era), University of Würzburg (Germany) Full Time Job

The University of Würzburg invites applications for the position of University Professor of Musicology (grade W3) to be filled as soon as possible.

The candidate should represent the field of Historical Musicology (Music of the European Modern Era) in research and teaching. A research expertise should lie in the music history of the 18th to the 21st centuries. This division chair is expected to be methodologically open and to engage with current paradigms in the humanities, to be interested in science communication, and to critically situate European music cultures in a global context. Innovative approaches, i.e., from Media Studies, Performance Practice Research, or Global Music History, are especially welcome as an extension of an analytical, philological, and cultural-historical research profile. Support for the Institute’s Musical Instrument and Media Collection and interest in the university’s interdisciplinary centres is desirable.

Teaching duties include covering music of the European Modern Era and offering courses for the Musicology, Music Education, and Ethnomusicology programs. Interest in the development of joint courses with Ethnomusicology on questions of globally intertwined music history is explicitly desired. The University of Würzburg attaches great importance to the intensive supervision of students and doctoral candidates.

Prerequisites include a relevant doctoral degree, three years of teaching experience, and postdoctoral academic achievements (e.g., a Habilitation, a junior professorship, or publications on a research topic distinct from the doctoral thesis). Experience in academic self-governance, curriculum development, and external funding is highly desirable.
